I am from Makkah, and her family has asked for a dowry of SAR 80,000. I am employed but earn SAR 8,000 a month. Why is the amount so high? Even if I save for years, I will not reach it. What should I do?

A dowry is not a measure of a woman's dignity. Speak honestly to her family and offer what you can afford. A family seeking a respectable marriage will accept a reasonable amount.

Here in Bahrain, awareness campaigns have helped reduce the trend of very high dowries somewhat. But the real solution is to speak to the woman herself, or to a mediator in her family who understands your circumstances. Families sometimes negotiate when they see that the young man is sincere.
