Mahr and Marriage Costs

Does Agreeing to a Modest Mahr Mean a Man Does Not Value His Bride?

My family says that a modest mahr—one thousand dinars or less—shows that a man lacks ambition or does not value the woman. I think the man's character matters more than the number. What do you think?

Here in Kuwait, some couples married with a modest mahr and live far better than many others. The amount is not the measure; a man who protects and respects his wife is.

I am Saudi, and my husband paid a modest mahr, yet we own our home and travelled to Europe in our first year. Families sometimes see the number without seeing the whole person.

The mahr is the woman's right, not her family's, and she is the one who decides whether to accept it.
