Marriage Guardianship and Unjust Refusal

My Guardian Rejects a Suitor Without a Logical Reason. What Are My Rights?

I am 28, and a suitor has come with every quality we asked for: he is religious, employed and respectful. My older brother rejects him but will only say, 'I do not feel comfortable about him.' I do not know what to do, and I am no longer a young girl.

This is clear injustice. In Saudi Arabia, the courts can intervene if a guardian unjustly prevents marriage without a religiously valid reason. If his refusal continues, explore the proper way to bring the matter before the court.

Try asking a respected older relative to speak with him. Sometimes a brother remains rigid with his sister but listens to an uncle from either side of the family.

'I do not feel comfortable about him' is not a sufficient explanation. Ask your brother to explain his reasons in detail and keep a record of his answers. That will help if you later need formal family mediation.
